Sources and caveats

Countries: OECD national balance sheets for non-financial assets (Table 9B): land (AN211), dwellings (AN111), other buildings and structures (AN112). Latest year each country reports, converted at the World Bank average exchange rate for that year. % of GDP uses World Bank GDP in local currency for the same year. Countries in grey publish no land estimate. That includes China, India, Brazil and most of the world.
US states: residential land plus farmland. Residential land is single-family homes only (ACS 2024 count) × FHFA's as-is property value × land share for 2022 (Davis, Larson, Oliner & Shui, FHFA WP 19-01). Farmland is from the USDA NASS land-value survey and the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Apartments, commercial, industrial and public land are not counted, so states add up to less than the US national-accounts figure.
US counties: residential land only. Counties outside FHFA's 2022 panel use its pooled cross-section, rescaled by the state's move, and are marked as estimates. Connecticut's old counties don't match the 2024 planning regions and are left out.
Denominators: population from World Bank / ACS 2024; land area from World Bank / Census Gazetteer 2024; US GDP from BEA (states 2025, counties 2024).
